As a pharmacy student, i was opportune on the 12th day of June, 2018 to attend the first East Zonal round table talk of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria on; Abuse of substance. It was indeed an interesting event with representatives and elites from various bodies and agencies.
So many things were said as regard causes, effects and solutions of drug/substance abuse.
From all that was said, it is obvious that there are so many young persons out there who are unhappy and lack satisfaction. Out of frustration most of them resolve to abuse of these drugs/substances to the detriment of their health, personality, career, relationships and even the society at large. My question is, why do we have so many young people who are frustrated and confused?
From the highlights of yesterday's event, it was mentioned that parents, teachers etc have failed in their responsibities that is why we have midrected youths who end up wayward! Also, peer group was another cause that was raised… Personally, i believe a life that has found essence will not easily be frustrated no matter the challenges of life. Purpose serves as a driving force and gives a person the reason to keep pushing even when the hope seems too tiny to hold unto. So, I'm simply saying young people lack joy, go about frustrated and unsatisfied because they have failed to discover who they are! In trying to be like another, they are never so good and that intimidates them. Meanwhile, there is no way you will find fulfilment in another man's calling!
They went on to discuss the way forward, what can be done to reduce the rate of drug/substance abuse. Some drugs have been bound as a result of abuse even though they have awesome therapeutic effects. It was said that winning the fight over drug abuse requires everyone to wake up to his/her responsibilities as a citizen, parent, family, church etc.
If the producers and marketers adhere strictly to the rules guiding the sales of drug, it will help reduce the menace! Also there was a call on the regulatory bodies to wake up to their responsibilities. Finally, we were advised not to treat drug addicts with disdain rather to help them realize the hazardous effects of drugs and help them through the process of recovery!
I would like to add to the above that as a young man or woman, you get a life! I mean discover how you can be an asset to your world. You are a solution if only you will recognize your uniqueness and reason for living! That which you are willing to die for because it is worth dieing for. It propels you and keeps your passion burning! The truth is that you will become too focus to be distracted, too busy to be depressed, loving what you do so well that you are always happy! This is not the time to blame the government, your parents or the society. Instead of destroying yourself with drugs, take your destiny in your hands! You are the future of Nigeria and Africa at large.
