Some persons are just eager to hear your story, know your status, plan and next line of action just to measure and compare your life and theirs and to console themselves when they feel they are not doing so great as they want to but seems to be better than you...
They identify with you as friends and show so much concern and are even ready to go an extra mile for you not because they so much love you nor are so kind but consoling you and being around you gives them joy that they have someone they are better than.
If your situation turns around for good they become your worst enemies! Beware of those you call friends...
