Actually, your personal issues are enough to blind you from seeing others with their problem but if you must be a good companion you must be a good attention giver. No matter how hard your issues are pressing, you don't push to be heard first instead you give attention and care even if you cannot provide a solution, let the fellow know you share in his/her troubles, then you can speak up about your own issues.
